With no shortage of unique and interesting independent companies in Notting Hill, it takes a lot to stand out amid the crowd of quirky personalities that light up one of London's most nuanced areas. Pedlars, however, have established themselves by selling exclusive homewares, bags, stationary, clothes and gifts, with a focus on supporting British producers and concentrating on selling high quality products. As well as the shop, Pedlars boast a café in the back, claiming to serve 'the very best coffee in W11'.#VillageLondon caught up with Pedlar's founder, Charlie Gladstone, to learn a bit more about what it's like to have a shop in Notting Hill.
Tell us a bit about what you do?
We are retailers and we run a cafe. We sell homewares, gifts, vintage and the best coffee we know.
How did it all start?
We started Pedlars 18 years ago as a mail order business. It's developed from there. I learn as I go along, just as I did when we started.
How is business?
Good. I mean it's always going to be tough running an independent shop in London, but we're happy and so are our customers.
How is Notting Hill and how has it played a role in the business?
Notting Hill is a wonderful place. The Portobello market keeps it lively and village-like.
What made you choose the area?
We lived nearby and so it made sense.
Do you hope to bring even more of a sense of character to the area?
I'm sure we do. It's all about people and we have a team that have been really constant so we contribute on that level.
How do you feel about gentrification in the local area?
Gentrification is what happens in cities; they ebb and flow. Moaning about it is like moaning about a river changing its course. It's natural and exciting. Notting Hill is special and always will be.
